Cost Savings: The Value of the PharmacistDepartment of Pharmacy Practice, College of Pharmacy, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602 The cost savings of consultant pharmacy practice and drug-related problems and care outcomes of dealing with the geriatric patients at all levels of care are reviewed. The consultant pharmacist has been shown to decrease overall drug costs, adverse drug reactions, and drug-related hospitalizations and mortality, while improving the quality of drug therapy and actually lowering drug monitoring costs. Problems and issues yet to be resolved are presented along with recommendations for improved quality of pharmacy services and education.
